How can I find a rental home in a rural area?

October 282010

I currently live in a small apartment in a big city. I’ve just graduated from college, and I have been conducting a job search. I’ve been centering my search around my home state in the Midwest, and the best prospects that I have (as a teacher) are in the more rural areas. Since I’m a young professional, just out of college, I obviously can’t afford to put a down payment on a home, so I need to rent (maybe a house, a condo, or a good-sized apartment). But it’s very difficult to find listings for these rural areas. Any suggestions on how I may go about my search? Thanks.

They still do it the old fashioned way, with a flyer on the bulletin board at the local market.

If you are talking rural rural, then speak with folks at the schools you are applying at. In super small towns, everyone knows everything, or they know someone who knows everything. Rural areas don’t usually have condos or large scale apartments, so it’s going to be about talking to folks.

You can also try to contact local real estate agents, the town’s community office, and read local newspapers.

I’m a property manger in a small rural town. We have a website but most small landords don’t.
