Thieves Target Items of Value by Browsing Craigslist
April 42010
MINNEAPOLIS — There’s a new warning about what you post on the internet. A distinctive fireplace was stolen from a south Minneapolis home, and the thieves targeted the property manager by browsing home listings on Craigslist.
Tom Zocher never thought putting an ad out for renters would lead to someone taking a piece of the home. Zocher had a 1901 stained-glass vintage fireplace stolen from a property he managed.
Zocher checked on his rental property Friday morning and couldn’t believe what was missing. The mantel surrounded the fireplace was gone. Built in 1901, it was the most significant feature of the home.
Deb Greene of the Minneapolis Area Association of Realtors says stealing pieces of a home for sale is a growing trend. Greene understands its a catch-22 — wanting to present the home in a beautiful manner to entice renters and buyers — but instead marketing to thieves.
Minneapolis Police says thieves stealing something they saw online is new to them. They discourage showing anything of value when people put up ads online.
